The Galle Face Hotel built in 1864 by British entrepreneurs looking to start a business in the city was name after the Galle Face Green. Appropriately the signature Restaurant of the Galle Face Hotel which is named The 1864 is an experience one should try.
After making our way down to the Regency section where the restaurant is located we cracked open a bottle of Australian Chardonnay which I though was quite suitable for the day. Light and crispy and citrussy but not too over powering was ideal specially with the sea overlooking us. Today I felt that this was going to be quite a treat.
Since we came here during lunch time to try the dinner menu we were quite happily making a feast out of the bread rolls in front of us with the flavoured butters until the order was ready. We started off with a Apple and Celery Soup with Crab Cesar. Quite a refreshing starter with a bit of salad and soup which I though was quite a nice combination and good balance.
Moving on to the main course’s we ordered the Lamb Shank, Seared Prawns, the Vegetable Stack and the Grilled Lobster. Digging in to my friends dish I found the lobster to be quite the treat. The Lobster was grilled and served over roasted pumpkins with a coconut milk and lobster emulation. This was quite a first to taste these particular flavors together. Then Seared Prawn with the Soba Noodles with Mango Salsa. Mango Salsa and Prawn combination is always winning and the dish had good texture throughout which made this also a good choice to make.
Diverting my attention to my Lamb Shank I found it to be amazingly tender. The sauce truly stole the day which was a Red Wine Balsamic reduction which complimented the Lamb perfectly and completed the dish. The Lamb was also accompanied with garlic onion and polenta. The main courses were all quite good but the top pick would I must say be the Lobster which was almost like a bite of history.
The desert arrived before we knew it and I felt quite sad that we had to be leaving soon. Quickly putting thoughts of leaving to a side a stared at my plate, Passion Fruit Five Ways. Now this was the treat I was waiting for each bite from each little bit of dessert on the one plate was outstanding. It was a hard choice between this and the Chocolate Fantasy which was also an assortment of different desserts. In the end the Kalua Ice Cream which make with the Chocolate Fantasy stole my heart.
What and experience to be seated here and indulge in such great food while absorbing the history around you. If you haven’t already graced the charming 1864 you must for even Princess Alexandra of Denmark commented that “the peacefulness and generosity encountered at the Galle Face Hotel cannot be matched”. This I find is quite true.
