Today's choice of food, took us back to the Havelock town. The area of the city which still has its greenery and its rambutan stands (which will be on display in the month of July and August) lined up in front of the park. After passing a popular supermarket situated in town, you make a right turn and enter into a Secret Garden, which is hidden away among the big trees far from the busy streets of Havelock town.
I'm quite sure that this is what, Frances Hodgson Burnett had in mind when he wrote this particular novel. Covered with huge trees and lovely greenery, Havelock bungalow has a breathtaking ambience. The bungalow which was one of the first few places to bring the concept of boutique hotels into Sri Lanka was established in 1999. The restaurant is cosy and is ideal for intimate gatherings and also provides the perfect setting for meals outside especially on cloudy days when nature's beauty is at its best.
After admiring its surrounding splendour, we sat down to quench our thirst and recover from the journey. The chocolate milk shake I had was very good, actually one of the best I have had in recent times.
First in line was the Coconut and crab risotto dish. This scrumptious dish was one of the first dishes that caught my eye as it was served in a coconut shell. The risotto was rich with crab meat and creamy flavours and was definitely tasty and is a must try at Havelock bungalow.
The Brochette of seer and prawns were soft and tasty and was definitely made to satisfy my taste buds specially the prawns. The Spicy peanut chicken with jasmine rice and vegetable ribbons was colourful as it had a variety of tasty goodies combined into one simple dish. The taste of the spicy peanut chicken was quite different to the usual taste of chicken.
According to one of the critics cum friend in my clan, the Maple roast pork with sweet potato chilli butter greeks, was excellent. The pork was roasted according to the correct temperature and was succulent and tasty. The dish was well teamed with sweet potato which provided the missing flavour to this dish.
Roast pumpkin, mushrooms and spinach risotto and Spaghetti with prawns are some of the other dishes that one should look out for when you're at Havelock bungalow.
In addition to this, the restaurant also offers a variety of starters which include Caesar salad and Grilled egg plant salad among many others. After enjoying these scrumptious dishes, we decided to order the desserts in order to complete today's meal. While I tried out the double chocolate cheese cake, others munched on a Lemon tart and some home made ice creams.
My dessert was quite tasty but the Lemon tart had a strong lemon flavour which unfortunately had a lasting taste. The Honey comb and the Cardamom ice creams were tasty and are a definite must try. The Cardamom ice cream has a unique flavour as it is spicy but yet sweet and nice.
With a spectacular ambience around you and food to suite your moods, Havelock bungalow is definitely a place that should not be missed out on. |
