The ocean that surrounds our little island is one of the best things about being a Sri Lankan. If you ever have the need to splash a bit, swim in the sea or just build a sand castle to relive your childhood; all you have to do is visit the coastline that we have been abundantly gifted with. The beach is something I love dearly. In my opinion the atmosphere, the sea spray and the waves have the extraordinary power of soothing any soul. The sound of the waves colliding and the smell of the sea is an experience in itself.
Today we decided to drive down to the coast line in search of the sea and also experience some scrumptious dishes offered at Golden Mile restaurant located in the west coast.
The ambience of Golden Mile is something that cannot be described in mere words but should be experienced in real life. Since the beach is just in front of the restaurant, people can even take a stroll on the beach before heading down for a meal. Unfortunately our schedule didn't include play time so as soon as we inhaled a few fresh breaths; we headed down with the task at hand.
After gulping up a fresh juice while getting acquainted with our host, we started off the meal with a soup. The Cream of Chennai or known as Mulagatani was delicious, even though the taste was different to the usual soup we have tasted in past experiences, it was definitely worth while.
After tasting the soup, we were presented with an enormous Seafood platter which included ample amounts of grilled sea meat such as squid, lobsters, jumbo prawns, king prawns and finally crabs with their huge claws. Since we couldn't devour the platter on its own, we decided to order a dish of savoury rice, a toss and mix salad accompanied with a Prawn thermidor.
I was graciously served with plenty of squid, prawns and crabs and the rest of it. As I savoured every bite, I also filled my hunger accompanied with the prawn thermidor. With every bite I took, the prawn thermidor proved to be an excellent dish with its creamy flavour soothing my taste buds.
The seafood platter is capable of serving an entire family as Golden Mile is very generous with the size of the platter and the amount of seafood added in to it. I must admit that the grilled squid and the prawns were really good. The lobster and crab were quite good but since the latter needed a bit of effort and time, I didn't have the opportunity of relishing its soft, white meat.
After our hunger was satisfied, we decided to start on with the desserts to experiment with our sweet tooth. When browsing through the dessert menu, the name Jamaican dream interested me and therefore I decided to taste this newly discovered dessert.
Munching into Jamaican dream, I was able to taste the caramelized bananas with ice cream topped off with butterscotch sauce.
The Apple cake made out of stewed apple and sponge cake hidden in puff pastry and Kahlua mocha cake, another sponge cake with kahlua liqueur were some of the desserts offered at Golden Mile.
Golden Mile, offers a variety of dishes in addition to the ones I have mentioned earlier. Their dishes vary from Seafood rendezvous, Ocean Pride, King of the Lake to Fettucini Alfredo and Mushroom marinara and if there is any other dish you need to try out that might not be in the menu, go ahead and ask the Chef whether he can prepare it specially for you and chances are, your wish will be fulfilled. |
